A Way Out is an action-adventure game played from third-person perspective. This game is specially designed for split-screen cooperative play. In this game, players control Leo and Vincent, who were trapped in the prison. In the game Leo and Vincent must break out of the prison and stay in the run from the authorities. The story of both the protagonist are told simultaneously. Each situations in the game can be approached differently, with both characters taking different roles. Players need to cooperate with each other in order to progress in the game. Their roles are not fixed, so players can swap their roles in other playthrough.
The design philosophy for the game is that the team wanted to create a cooperative game that is unique and different. This game is described as an emotional adventure. As a result, the cutscenes will play out even during the online play to ensure that player can understand the story of the character. There is a wide variety of gameplay sequences from stealth to driving to make the game more realistic and interesting to play.
According to Fares, the game was his passion project and he cancelled an upcoming feature film in order to devote more time to working on the game.
